Digital radio
A digital radio is a radio which receives a broadcast digital signal instead of the terrestrial radio waves that were received by standard radio transmitters of the past. Digital radio broadcasts are noted for the greatly improved quality of signal that they receive when compared to standard terrestrial radio. Digital radio programs often have very clear audio.
Digital radio has now becoming increasingly common place with many stations now switching their broadcasting to a digital format as well as a standard radio broadcast in order cover the demand for digital radio. There are also a number of stations which are only available via digital radio. More people now have a digital radio in their homes than ever before, although digital radio coverage in some areas is still relatively poor as it is still in its early stages of development, for meantime FM radio is still the dominate means of broadcasting a radio signal.
One advantage which digital radio has over standard terrestrial radio is that stations are able to broadcast text within their signal and a digital radio that has the correct equipment to process this signal and a LCD screen to display it can often display a message telling the listener the name of the song their listening to. Whilst terrestrial radio is still the dominant form, the marked improvements that are occurring in the development of digital radio technology could see only digital signals on the airways in a relatively short space of time.
